Homeopathy can get Runner's Trots to trot off
This is always a fun topic. No embarrassment here.
Lots of runners suffer from runner's trots (diarrhoea), especially people running longer distances. You are not alone.
It’s a bit of a bugger and can make running challenging - needing to find loo stops every few miles.
It could be a way of improving speed - dashing to the loo, but more speed seems to make it worse.
Why do runners get digestive problems?
No one really knows why it happens. Probably a mixture of things such as:
Diet - runners need more carbs and use gels and bars, all of which can cause diarrhoea.
Exercise itself - the body and internal organs get jiggled about while running and can cause diarrhoea.
Less blood flow to the intestines - can cause the gut to get rid of the food, i.e. diarrhoea.
Prerace nerves or anxiety - can cause a sudden need for the loo due to diarrhoea.
What can runners do about it?
Things you can do to help yourself:
Reduce the intensity or distance of running in the short term. Then slowly build back up, giving the body and gut time to adjust to running.
Avoid certain foods before and / or during a run, such as lots of fibre or fat.
Practice fuelling in training to find out what works for you. You don't want any nasty surprises on race day or on a long run.
Stay hydrated before and during a run or race.
Avoid NSAIDs, caffeine, alcohol or spicy food before a long run.
Why choose homeopathy rather than anything else?
Homeopathic medicines are great to use because:
They are safe for anyone to use,
They can be used before and during a run (just add them to your water),
They don't taste or smell of anything and
They don't have any side effects.
Plus they aren't banned.
Which homeopathic remedies can help Runner’s Trots?
Some great ones for diarrhoea from motion are:
Apis - this remedy is good if the diarrhoea is watery and yellow. Any heat makes it worse. You may feel tearful and whiny.
Bryonia - this remedy is a wonder for any ailment that is worse for movement - diarrhoea, headaches, tummy aches, leg aches.
Ferrum - good if trying to eat brings on diarrhoea. You may also feel sick or be sick after eating. You may feel irritable and find any noise unbearable.
Veratrum - diarrhoea with headache and feeling or being sick. Very painful and watery diarrhoea, lots of it and forcibly evacuated.
Nux vomica - diarrhoea and constipation are alternating. Really good if you feel that everything is too bright, too noisy, too smelly.
Natrum muriaticum - Good if you have cutting pains in your tummy and burning pains after the diarrhoea. You may need to cry but not want anyone to see or to try to console you.
There are a couple of thousand homeopathic remedies and so if none of these seem to fit your symptoms, there will be one that does.
If you regularly suffer from runner's trots and trying some of the other things doesn't help, you may need to see a homeopath for deeper homeopathic treatment.
